Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Insulinoma questions
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi Linda,
You have some good questions. Yes, Pediapred
should be giving 2 times a day. In the late stages,
it can be increased to 3 times a day. The 0.75ml
(of a1mg/ml liquid) is 0.75mg twice a day. That is
still in the middle part of the range, so no need to
worry yet. You can consider adding Proglyem to
the treatment also. In addition a protein supplement
such as Hill's a/d, baby food (second stage turkey
and turkey gravy, or chicken and chicken gravy), or
Oxbow's Carnivore Care should be used. The extra
protein will help increase the glucose level.
Now for your melatonin question: No melatonin does
not lower the blood glucose level. There are actually
melatonin receptors in the pancreas and in insulinomas
(rat study), and melatonin helps to decrease the amount of
insulin that is secreted. Obviously that would be a benefit
for a ferret with an insulinoma! Plus melatonin also helps
to stimulate the appetite which also helps the ferret with
an insulinoma.
Hope that clears up the confusion.
Jerry Murray, DVM
