Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Seizures - Urgent
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Thanks so much for the quick response. I had seen the links you kindly provided when I did a search for "seizure" in the archives. In some respects it was a little bit reassuring. Does it really happen on occasion that a ferret will have an isolated seizure with no known cause and then go on to live a normal life without another seizure? Could he still have an infection even though he's been on Amoxi and metronidazole?

I'm not sure how current TJ's vaccinations are. If it were canine distemper wouldn't there be other symptoms of illness as well? I seem to recall crusty eyes, swollen pads, right? As for rabies, that thought certainly has crossed my mind but he's never been anywhere to be exposed to rabies at least from the time he entered the shelter until now. Wouldn't he have gotten ill before now if he had been exposed to rabies prior to entering the shelter (which I think was back in Nov or Dec, I'd have to check).

Thank you for the suggestion of meningitis. I didn't realize that it was actually seen in ferrets. How is that diagnosed? Animerge will be running a complete Chem screen, CBC & urinalysis. Would it show up there or is a spinal tap necessary?

ADV is always a remote possibility. He was tested when he was younger but not tested since then. I am somewhat familiar with ADV, having had a ferret test positive for ADV about 5 years ago. Could the virus still be alive in my home after all that time? All my other ferrets tested negative at that time and tested negative 6 months or so after the pos. ferret died. I knew about motor issues related to ADV but didn't realize that seizures were a possible symptom.

Again thank you so much for your input.
