If my vet orders Imrab3 am I allowed by law to give the shot myself? I am
in Michigan.
Also, the vet has made it so I can administer distemper myself. I am not
sure which is the best syringe size and needle gauge for Distemper or for
rabies.
We used to use 22 gauge but i have been reading that 25 gauge is better.
Thanks,

Howdy. If you give it yourself, are you prepared for a possible vaccine re=
action? Can you get a catheter into a ferret or give IV steroids? Do you =
have oxygen available? That's what I'd be most concerned about with any va=
ccine; I can do all of those things, being a vet tech, but I still wouldn't=
want to give any vaccines "myself" without immediate access, in the event =
of a reaction, to oxygen, dexamethsone SP, epinephrine, and extra hands to =
help get into a ferret vein. =
One of my tech friends had a vax reaction with one of her ferrets (to Ferva=
c D) last week, after the DVM left the building, and even though she is exp=
erienced and had another tech in the building, had to rush the ferret to Tu=
fts after another IM benadryl injection (better than nothing, without wasti=
ng time trying to get a vein to get epi or dex SP into the ferret-Tufts is =
very close by) just in case it needed a doctor's care. Techs aren't reall=
y legally allowed to just give steroids or other meds, without them having =
been prescribed/ordered by a DVM, even for their own pets, incidentally.
(They will, of course, have the vet wait longer before leaving/do the vax e=
arlier before the vet will be leaving-they hadn't had problems before and n=
either vet nor tech thought really carefully enough about the possibility o=
f a vax reaction despite premedding.) Another example of why to stick arou=
nd at your vet's for 30-45 minutes after any vaccine. This reaction occure=
d about 20 minutes after the vaccine.
I don't know what your situation is (shelter with medical experience?, etc.=
) but just a few thoughts.
I like 25 gauge needles better with little guys.
I am glad to hear that Purevax is not being discontinued, yet disheartened =
that it is yet again backordered... =
Thanks for all the info-I'll be sure to pass this along to my fellow hospit=
al.
