Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Rabies and distemper questions
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Michigan law requires the rabies vaccine be administered by a vet.

We order our own distempers (at least we used to when we could get Fervac D),
syringes and needles. We then take the shots to our vet office and give the
distemper during the visit while he administers the rabies shot. Sometimes he
scruffs and I poke and sometimes it's the other way around. :)

I would never give a vaccination at home due to the risk of reaction. Doing the
distempers this way means we save $25 per critter, per distemper vaccination. Our
vet allows us to do things this way to help the shelter save cost...but we'd never take
the risk of "at home" shots.

If your vet will order Purevac for you at cost, then you could purchase needles and
syringes and perhaps you can work out some sort of arrangement similiar to ours.
Perhaps the vet could give you the rabies shots at cost if you'll pay an office visit for
1-6 critters or something simliar, know what I mean?

Shots in our area (xxxxxxx is about 1.5 hours west of us, in farm country where vet
care is much less expensive) run about $50 for rabies and distemper in total. We're
down to $30 total for our current shot method, times however many critters we take
in each year = big savings!!! So the vet office is still making money and we get
savings, which I'm grateful for. :)In most cases we take 4-10 critters per visit and
keep the shot visits short and sweet, so the vet office can more easily wrap in the
difference in the costs involved.
