You might want to start with a "Tennessee Panel", which is a blood panel done at the University of Tennessee Vet College to diagnose adrenal disease. See http://www.miamiferret.org/fhc/basics.htm.

I believe that would be a good start, even though your vet doesn't think it's adrenal. Not all cases of adrenal disease have the standard presentation of rat tail and thinning hair on the hind quarters, and an inexperienced vet can easily misdiagnose a different presentation. Best to start by confirming or eliminating adrenal, unless someone else recognizes the symptoms as having a different cause.
