Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: vaccines, giving them "yourself"

They will be vaccinated at the vet.
However, to minimize time and 'resources' to justify us getting vax at
cost, they came up with the idea of having us administer them ourselves
without the need to tie up a vet. They are allowing us to buy the
distemper ourselves and charge a flat fee for use of the room.
Because I am fairly sure that you can't give Imrab 3 or any Merial product
without being a veterinarian, they said if that is true, then they will be
charging $10 per vaccination. Hence, why I wanted to make sure. I have
current dosages for reactions the vet.
A while back when I started the rescue 'officially' with many residents
coming in who were older and probably going to react, I requested the best
medical protocols for reactions to give to my vet.
I constantly use this list as a resource for my vet (as in getting the
Tufts protocol for Nilla) and will continue to do so, this is a great
list. I take it in stride that I got three posts back with warnings...keep
looking out for the little guys!!! I remember freaking out around December
when a 'rescue' called me to adopt one of our ferrets - a no no in the
first place (why adopt when you rescue???) - but he said he was planning
on going to Quality Farm and Fleet and giving the ferrets vax they bought
there. I told him that would kill them (most likely, though some have
managed to survive Duramune and other vax)..but I was still throroughly
frightened.
The reason I asked for the needle size was because they are having me
purchase the syringes and needles, and they have never done Imrab 3 for
me, only distemper, and I know they were using big needles for my little
ones before (22). I wanted to know to order smaller because the vet only
has 22 and larger.
