Subject: [ferrethealth] Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Yesterday my Riley, approx. 4.5 years old, neutered, was suddenly very limp=
and weak, could barely walk a few steps before lying down. He was okay in
the morning and at night didn't want to eat and when I put him on the floor=
to walk, he didn't have much strength at all. Went to the vets today, firs=
t
thing that came to my mind and my vet's mind was ADV. Riley had blood take=
n
for haematology and biochemistry and protein electrophoresis (sp?). He got=
a shot of prednisolone, Baytril and B12 and was put on IV fluids. His
temperature was 37 C, he felt cold to the touch and eventually started to
shiver. His eyes were watery. His heart rate was slow but eventually got
faster. By today he didn't even have the strength to stand up at all, only=
crawl very, very short distances (inches). I took him home from the vets
tonight and suddenly thought that his symptoms were identical to my Tara's,=
she went downhill rapidly and was put to sleep 2 days after becoming ill an=
d
pathology revealed she had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and had been in hear=
t
failure. I realised when Riley became very uncomfortable and kept crawling=
around and that's what reminded me of Tara.
So my question is, how is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy diagnosed and what
meds are given? The same as for dilated cardiomyopathy? And is there hope=
for Riley?
