Subject: [ferrethealth] Crystals in urine (caused blockage)...cause?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Critter visited last night with serious woe. He's a 3 year old boy who's been healthy
as can be, far as we know. A couple of weeks ago he started peeing on anything
and everything...just dribbled his way all over. He began drinking double his normal
amount daily and continued to pee everywhere. He had just been to the vet two
days ago and a urine sample was obtained and sent out. Then last night he couldn't
go at all...he was crying, straining and generally miserable. I drained his bladder via
syringe and he settled in for the night...until the vet was open (typical for this area
= no emergency care available overnight).

Doc did a urethral re-route today. He flushed and drained his bladder and said he
found cysts in the urine, which had clearly blocked up his works. This is a well
experienced ferret vet by the way. He said if Jeeter was a cat he wouldn't be
surprised, but he hasn't seen this in a ferret. Absolutely no signs of adrenal
disease. He's always eaten medium to top quality chow, such as Iams Kitten, Totally
Ferret and his current: Purina One Kitten.

Anyone have any ideas what would cause this crystal problem in the first place? I
know with cats it's often dietary. Doc wasn't sure about changing food since he has
no information for this sort of thing in ferrets. Any tests to run, other than analysis
of the urine and so forth?
