Subject: [ferrethealth] Shadow's lipoma - the findings
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

You may recall that Shadow (7 years old) had an ultrasound in Dec. that resulted in
an abdominal mass the vet said was consistent with a *lipoma.* Two Saturdays ago
(March 25) we returned to the clinic that suggested the ultrasound for a followup for
a couple of my ferrets, including Shadow.

The vet there scoffed at the lipoma and suggested a followup ultrasound with a
biolpsy of the mass. This was to be scheduled, along with a biopsy of his left paw,
which is swollen and has some sort of *something* going on.

Before the ultrasound and biospy could be done, we developed a problem. I watched
Shadow go potty on Friday, but Saturday morning he was straining and had four
unsuccessful attempts at a bowel movement. I called the vet and we headed in for
an emergency ultrasound and checkup. This was accomplished on Saturday, April 1.
Additional changes in this week included the appearance of a new mast cell tumor
on his left thorax and a small mass beside his anus (I found it looking for a
prolapse.)

Result: the mass turns out to be his prostate, which is now so enlarged it is
interfering with his bowel movements. Shadow got another Lupron injection. We are
on Clavamox now and hope that will help clear up any infection that may be
contributing to this. There were also two enlarged abdominal lymph nodes and the
adrenals were within normal limits. We return in another month for another
injection, but will also be closely monitoring him.

He is in good hands. I am obviously angry, especially since a vet noticed in early
2005 that the prostate was slightly enlarged, the local vet could palpate the
prostate, and I have been trying to stay on top of this. I can't help but think that a
proper identification in Dec. would have put me a little ahead on this.

If anyone has anything else to suggest, I am always open! I will share anything
offered with the current vet. Thanks.

renee :)
