Okay, I have been talking to Sukie about it because I couldn't bring myself=
to write to the list- but Riley was dead by Saturday morning. He (and my
Tara last year) developed identical symptoms. They were completely normal,=
playful, happy, eating well, you would have thought they were 100% healthy.=
Then within 12 hours they both deteriorated. First they could barely walk,=
then after another 12 hours they could barely crawl. They had a slow heart=
rate (no murmur), were cold to the touch and Riley's temperature was 37
degrees C. But they didn't want to be covered up with a blanket. They
also had watery eyes. Riley didn't want to drink but ate ground chicken
right to the end. He deteriorated further Friday night when he became
restless and let out little moans. I was planning on having him put to
sleep Saturday morning but when I woke about 7 a.m., he'd gone. The first
ferret that I didn't have put to sleep. I felt horrendously bad because I
hadn't been there for him. I had stayed up with him until well past 1.00
a.m. and when he calmed down for a while, I fell asleep.
Tara had been put to sleep 2 days after becoming sick and Riley died just
over 2 days after he became sick. Seems they both went into sudden (acute?=
)
heart failure. Riley did get Frusemide and Enalapril (Enacard) on Friday
after an x-ray showed an enlarged heart but it didn't help. My vet did an
autopsy and the heart felt solid and the walls were badly thickened. So it=
looks like it was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the tissue samples were sent=
off to a lab.
