Subject: [ferrethealth] Red Ferret
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

This is a middle aged female ferret approx. 5 yrs old that was brought into the emergency clinic with a very red color to the skin. Blood work was done and the following results were out of the normal range:
ALKP 131
CREA 1.1
GLU 34
PHOS 9.7
Tbili 6.6
TP 7.7
GLOB 4.9
K 3.5
HCT 62.6
Other symptoms are those associate with adrenal disease; hair lose swollen vulva. Also excessive bruising and bleeding from IV sites and syringe pricks. Ferret was being treated with melatonin implants every 30 days for three sessions. Owner is concerned that the melatonin could cause this. Also the owner said prior to the redening of the skin the ferret was rolling and playing in their dogs beds. Owner is also concerned that the dogs may have brought something in that may have caused this. Is this a possible response to something like a pestiside? The major concern that has not been see before it the reddening of the skin. Has anyone seen this ever and if so what was the cause. Ferret is currently on a IV with potassium.
