Subject: [ferrethealth] 9 yr old w/bizarre behavior
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I have logged many hours trying to reconcile some symptoms that have arisen in my 9 year old female ferret. Perhaps this combination will be familiar to someone:
1.Hair Loss
In the past four months or so Cleo has continually lost hair, first on the top of her head, then moving down the nape of her neck and baring a thin bald line down her spine. Now the underside of her rear legs and belly are also nearly bare. Only recently has she begun to lose tail hair.
2.Agitation/insomia
Since her surgery 4 years ago to remove an adrenal tumor that was attached to her vena cava(?) we have continued feeding her stage 2 chicken and turkey baby food twice daily as a supplement to Totally Ferret kibble. In the past few months she has progressed from waiting by her dish at 10 or 11 p.m. And
8 am to let us know it's baby food time, to climbing into our bed several times during the night to wake us and lead us back to her dish as though she's not been fed. She will stay up for long periods of time, where as before she would match our sleep schedules perfectly. While she is in our bed, and every time we hold her, she also -
3.Licks constantly
Crazy, frantic, obsessive and lasting up to 20 minutes before she either exhausts or soothes herself and naps.
Is senility common in ferrets?
She's very active, and still agile enough to climb up and jump off our bed, but I feel that she's too old to withstand surgery if it's adrenal problems again. I will take her to where she had her surgery (Animal Medical Center in NYC) but could anyone tell me what to ask them? Tests? Any kind of non-surgical treatments? Melatonin or Lupron?
thank you.
