Hi,

I agree with Sukie that this sure sounds like adrenal
plus. Insulinoma or dental/gum problems make sense.
I would take her to the vet as a gum/dental problem
can sometimes be an infection or abscess requiring
antibiotics.

When our Podo has adrenal recur at around age 9.5 we
opted for lupron as our first choice. For him it
worked wonders: all symptoms disappeared. All the
vets who have treated my ferrets report around a 50%
success rate with lupron. We're about to try it with
Nyssa (turns eight in a few weeks, has lymphoma as
well). The vets I've worked with go to melatonin or a
combination of both as a second choice.

I do know of one case where a second adrenal surgery
was successfully done on a nine year old but the
surgery was originally for another life and death
issue. On a ferret that old I likely wouldn't risk a
second adrenal surgery and the risk of Addisonian
symptoms unless there truly was no other choice.

So... if your nine year old was mine I'd probably talk
to the vet about lupron in the one month depot. Start
with the shorter depot in case the dosage has to be
adjusted.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet, just
another ferret owner.

All the best,
Caity and the fantastic four
(Nyssa, Ella, Zephyr, and Chin Soon)
