Subject: [ferrethealth] Suspected insulinoma
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I have 11 month old female -Sugar-, about 6 weeks ago I noticed her going prostrate maybe once or twice during a 3-4 hour period of running around with her companion (most days) and also trance like states especially on waking. I took her to the vets office and he did a glucose test that came out at 5.1 mmol (92). We decided to retest in 4 weeks which was yesterday and got the same result - 92. Both these tests were done after 31/2 to 4 hr fast. Between the first and second test I never saw the prostration and less of the trances she also seemed to have more energy, there has been no change in diet or play time.
Sugar has always been less active than Sue (5 yr old) who can keep going for 4 hours usually, where Sugar would take a 20 min nap halfway through but I thought that this was normal variation between ferrets.
We have decided to continue to keep her under observation and retest with full blood work if she shows any deterioration.
As she is so young I would like to take the surgery option early if the diagnosis becomes more certain??
Is 11 months young for insulinoma and does the decided course of action seem reasonable.

Tony

My home is ferret proof - my heart is not.
