Subject: [ferrethealth] Update:Shelly, how specific to ferret liver is GGT?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I took Shelly in to Tufts yesterday and her bloodwork was
rechecked. The good news is that her ALT has gone down in the
past 10 days from 1500 to 800. Yay!

The bad news is that her GGT is 265 ( 5 is normal). Her lipase and
globulins are also high, and current thinking at Tufts is that this is
indicative of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. So, we will be starting
her on azothiaprine.

I was wondering how specific GGT is to the liver in ferrets? In
other words, can I attribute some of the elevation to the IBD?

I was all set to get her liver biopsied, but now I'm thinking it makes
more sense to put her on the azothiaprine and recheck bloods in 3
weeks. But:
My only concern there is that if she becomes less stable over time
we'll wind up wishing we had done the biopsy before disease
progressed and she was better candidate for anesthesia.

skyla
