Subject: [ferrethealth] diagnosing IBD and using Azathioprine
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I just read an old post of Dr. Williams regarding definitive diagnosis of IBD before going to immunosuppresants. At that time, (2002) intestinal biopsy was main way to diagnose this disease.

At Tufts, the current thinking is that one *can* diagnose IBD from bloodwork if one examines a specific group of values (lipase, globulins and some others). On this basis, Shelly is starting Azathioprine.

I have a lot of concerns about using this drug, especially given her extraordinarily high ALT in the past and the possible hepatotoxic effects of the drug. She's still on small amounts of pred for insulinoma too, so I'm concerned about all this immunosuppression and how her general health may be affected--will she become The Ferret in the Plastic Bubble??? ;-)

Any thoughts shared would be appreciated,

Skyla
