Yes, when a spleen is enlarged beyond the norm for a given age infection and malignancy are two things that are considered.
Regina, I know that the liver and sometimes the pancreas can be inflamed by a fur ball mechanically, but I don't know if that has been seen with ferret spleens from a mechanical origin.
It might be that the irritation from a fur ball might set the stage for ulceration and infection, resulting in splenic inflammation.
Is there reason to think that there is a large furball?
Others can speak more from experience because we have had few furball problems over the decades with these exceptions: a few that could be passed, one individual who had an ever worsening malformation that caused progressive dilation of his stomach so that he could not pass fur and had a hard time even passing food (resulting in fasts of over 8 hours whenever he needed surgery for his deformations after food kept still being in his stomach many hours after starting fasts), and finally one who had surgery but what was there was not mostly fur when checked but instead was mostly fake fleece fiber from eating in bed.
(I really swear by using a flea comb to dislodge fur during shedding seasons and reduce the amount that risks being ingested. We also use only the beds and huts on which we have covered all the fake fleece in the bedding with sewn on sheeting material.)
