Subject: [ferrethealth] Diarrhea questions, after fecals and treatment
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I had a community fecal run on our ferrets. We have 10 permanents and 12
residents who are adoptables at the rescue.
((Sidenote: I am feeding half and half Innova EVO which is low in
carbohydrates but high in protein (around 40 to 48%, I can't remember) and
the other half is Totally Ferret (high in carbs, good at protein level)...
Could the food be causing soft stools?))
Now, the fecal showed nothing at all. Much to my dismay! I wanted there to
be something shown so we could stop with the diarrhea; but nothing. So we
were told to treat with Metronidazole 2x a day for 14 days. They said we
would see results in a few days; so far, only 1 ferret that had explosive
diarrhea is affected; the others have firmer stools but some still have
very soft stools.
Are ferrets supposed to have firm stools or is it normal for them to have
the softer stools too? Is there another medicine we can try? I am just
tired of picking up really soft poo that gets onto the carpet as opposed
to the 'harder stuff' that doesn't make marks :)
Thanks so much!
