Subject: [ferrethealth] Very sick ferret and not sure what's wrong
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I have a 2yr old ferret, female (Peanut), who lost 1/2 of her body
weight in a couple of days time. She stopped eating, drinking, began
acting lethargic, seemed to have stomach pain (grinding teeth).
Because of what we'd gone through with another one of our kids, Boo
Boo, we thought maybe it could be ulcers, but her stools appeared
normal, and she seems a lot sicker than Boo Boo did even at his worst.
She's gone to the vet twice and is there now. The first time she was
dehydrated, but the labs showed that her liver enzymes were very
elevated (around 800). They sent her home with us with carafate,
antibiotics (in case it was ulcer), and milk thistle to help her
liver.
She's gotten worse, and she seems miserabl, squirmy, and she gags at
everything (food, water, etc.), and after eating or drinking
(force-feeding, etc.) she squeaks like she's hurting.
The vet said he's very concerned because of her liver enzyme values,
and he's not sure what's going on. They did an xray, but found no
blockage.. but he did mention that her stomach and part of her
intestine is filled with air, so much so that he said she could float
in water. We're not sure why that is.
We do know that she fights so much against eating or drinking,
clamping her teeth shut so hard that we can only hope to get anything
down her.
We're stumped. The vet is checking a couple of other things today,
rehydrating her, etc. But... we don't know what to do, what's wrong
with her, and it came on so suddenly. Again, he doesn't have the
tell-tale tarry stools like Boo Boo did when he had ulcer.
Any thoughts, suggestions, anything at all would be most helpful.
It's so difficult to even get her meds, etc. down, and water and
food... we're just stumped.
Any ideas or help... I would be so very grateful.
Thank you.
Ella
