HI, Alicia, and everyone else,

I think the 90 day average lifespan after diagnosis of
lymphoma is because very often the disease is present
with no obvious outward symptoms. We aren't talking
90 days from contracting the disease but from
diagnosis and if diagnosis only occurs in the late
stages of the disease that will skew the average.

Let me talk about the ferrets I had who died quickly:

1. Kodo, age 9.5, was diagnosed with lymphoma only on
the day he died. He had fluid buildup in his abdomen
and yet was dehydrated. He had gone downhill very
quickly. It was when the fluid was drawn out and
examined by a vet that she saw what was consistent
with lymphoma. It was confirmed only after his death.

2. Podo, age 10, again went downhill very quickly.
The first visible symptom (swollen lymph nodes)
happened only days before his death. He had multiple
health problems (cardiomyopthy, insulinoma, adrenal)
that may have lead us to not recognize that lymphoma
was present as well.

3. Ker Avon, age 5.5, first visible symptom was
sudden hind end paralysis. The diagnosis ended up
being lymphoma in his spinal column but we didn't know
that till right at the end though that was the best
guess from the start. The paralysis crept upward and
he was put to sleep when it made breathing difficult,
just over a week after onset.

These were the three that went fastest.

If you've had ferrets live 2+ years with the disease
you are the only person I know of who has managed
that. Nyssa is at 17 months and none of the vets who
have treated her expected her to live nearly this
long. BTW, she is *not* doing well at the moment.

All the best,
Caity and the fantastic four
