Barium isn't given when taking a standard x-ray. It's a liquid that's given to the ferret orally, which then shows up on the x-ray. It helps the vet/technician see how quickly/slowly the liquid is passing through the intestines. If there's a large enough obstruction, the fluid will slow down when it reaches the foreign body. They take multiple x-rays throughout the day.
