Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: Is garlic also dangeous?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
In relation the onion and garlic it is better to be safe than sorry and not give them as is pointed out in:
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/browse.php?msg=SG14494
That said, it appears to be a MATTER OF AMOUNT:

While Heinz bodies can be seen in any species when enough onion is
given, and of course cats are predisposed to the development of Heinz
bodies (precipitated denatured hemoglobin on the RBC cell membranes) -
I have never seen Heinz bodies on a ferret blood smear, nor does the
small amount of onion powder in Gerber's baby food appear to cause
any problem.
Ferrets do develop a immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, but right now,
little is definivitely known about it, and it does not appear to be
associated with the feeding of baby food - it is most often seen in
preciously healthy animals.

so the sensitivity looks possibly lower than in cats meaning that small amounts may not pose any concern for most ferrets, but there is no good reason to give onions or garlic, so think in degrees of exposure...

Garlic is another old wives tale. It has no effect on parasites at
all, be they worms, fleas, or ticks, but may have an adverse effect
on you. Phew!
