If you look at past posts from ferret veterinary pathologist, Dr. Bruce Williams, you will notice that ferrets do not get colds. They do get influenza, bacterial sinus infections, pneumonia, etc.
Unusual or persistent coughing always sends us to the vet and we always have the chest imaged. In the past we have had a ferret with a sudden mild cough who sounded normal when they listened to her chest but when she was x-rayed she had both pneumonia and pleurisy. If those hadn't been caught when they were she never would have made it.
