Subject: [ferrethealth] practical aspects of complete darkness
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Now that we know that the need for complete darkness has been scientifically
proven as a piece of the puzzle with respect to adrenal disease, I am
particularly interested in what we as ferret parents can do to help our babies. My
interest is especially strong because this summer we are moving to a house where
my ferrets will be in an upstairs bedroom with three windows. Right now they
are in a basement below ground bedroom and they get complete darkness without
my having to cover their cage. I am somewhat heartbroken that in addition to
my girls having to adjust to a new environment, they are being moved from a
room of complete darkness to a regular bedroom where that may be hard to
control. It is too late as we have already bought the new house.

My thoughts and questions:
a. Is natural light just as important, or does complete darkness for enough
hours along with artificial light do the trick (such as in a room with no
significant daylight windows)?
b. Is it worth it to spend a lot of extra money (I am happy to do so if it
will really help) to get high quality "black out" window treatments to keep
light out? Our new house is in a neighborhood with lots of outside lights
around, so I wonder if such window treatments really work.....or does a small amount
of light still typically come in and mess the whole thing up?
c. For those of us with regular rooms for our ferrets, who are thus far
symptom free - what is really the best way to prevent this problem? Black out
curtains, true blocking barriers to completely cover windows - it would look
ugly but maybe it would work, or a big blanket to cover their cages at night?????

Thoughts from others on this would be so helpful. I think many of us are in
this situation and if we can take practical steps with this new knowledge,
maybe we can help prevent adrenal disease in the first place without having to use
implants.

Thanks, Lisa & The Treasured Trio (Lily, Bridget & Clementine) and missing
Katie
