Subject: [ferrethealth] dehydrated and starved ferrets, any hints
To: "ferrethealth@smartgroups.com" <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

I have two ferrets - both were starved and deprived of water for three
weeks. My guess is that they drank their urine for a bit, and maybe the
owner decided to give them water here and there, since three weeks is not
possible for water.

So...

Each one weighs about as much as a fluffball of fur, and one is fine - I
know she's going to be fine, but the other is catatonic much of the time.
Her eyes are sunken in.

I have been giving her 3 to 4 cc's of lactated ringer's solution every few
hours, and also been tube feeding her Deliver 2.0 every few hours. She has
perked up. I am not sure what else to do. Should I also be tubing her with
some water? I am only giving small meals through the tube of Deliver (3 to
4 cc's as well) because the ferret can't hold down much right now. I fully
realize that her kidneys may have shut down, but I hope she is simply on
the brink where I can bring her back.

How many cc's should I be giving her? I wanted to start small due to her
stomach but if I can work up to a little more that would be great.

Any hints or suggestions would be appreciated. I tried to press charges
and the County AC said that since we have the ferrets, they won't
do anything despite all of the pictures and such that we took of the find,
because the ferrets aren't in their custody.

xxxxxxx
