Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: dehydrated and starved ferrets, any hints

I don't know if it will be applicable, but when we were saving Hilbert's kidneys he had to be twice the normal amount of water. Off hand, I can't recall what they was for him as a small male but I think it was about 150 ml per day.

If the kidneys are compromised think of a reduced phosphorus diet and also of supplementary fish oil. Maybe try adding potassium citrate. A kidney disease food (some reduce protein but I don't know if all do) like feline K/D or Eukanuba feline renal diet mixed 50/50 with Totally Ferrets Senior food or Marshall's senior food might help. if the kidneys are damaged.

I recall that Pam found that adding some Bob's Gravy to the water to amke a broth helped with one of her's. I think we would add different flavor meat baby foods, a/d, Nutrical (You need to use two forks to mix it.), etc. to also make thin broths of various flavors so that the fluid was interesting.

For humans meals I recall that when I was young meals had to be small but frequent in similar situations where the starvation was disease related.
