Subject: [ferrethealth] Eye removal & now MRSA
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hello everyone. About six months ago my 5 year old ferret had her eye remo=
ved due to not knowing whether or not there was a growth or if it was just =
an injury due to playing too rough with one of my other ferrets - long stor=
y short they removed her eye - no problem. There was a smear done and some=
thing sent off that came back negative. Six months later - the same eye swe=
lled up again; surgery to clean out and the brown goo culture was sent off,=
came back "slight MRSA infection." We immediately put her on Chloramphenic=
ol and she has been (next week will be 2 weeks). Went on vacation and had =
to take her in for emergency surgury because she had scratched out her stit=
ches - vet there heavily sedated her and it took her about 8 hours to fully=
come out of the drunkeness but her eye looks much better and no swelling a=
t all. He put her on Clavamox and then our vet called with the Chloramphen=
icol message and that was the only antibiotic that the MRSA would respond t=
o. After that she was doing better. Went back to our vet here, she was fi=
ne, came home and next day she was not really eating, dark green stools. C=
BC has only given us a liver warning (one of the numbers was way up - 2nd o=
n the report) which the vet said probably just from all the medicines she h=
as been on. They feel the eye is one thing, the gut is another. She is on=
pepcid once a day, still on the chloramphenicol twice a day and Metronidaz=
ole twice a day. She is still very week, and she stayed in the hospital ov=
ernight Thusday night. I have been giving her blended up ferret food with =
water and ferretone to get something down her. She is getting some fluids =
and food down her but still not eating the hard food. Stools are looking m=
ore like the "duck soup" I'm giving her and not so dark but she is still we=
ak. Any thoughts or suggestions? The tests both CBC and the chemistry do n=
ot show she has any kind of infection in her blood from the MRSA in the eye=
area - so it's not flowing through her body. Vet thinks it's just an upse=
t tummy yet they even seem a bit baffled. Any help would be appreciated.

Karen
