One study????? Gosh, no. Many studies, over many years, covering and confirming different parts of the process exist.

The reason the recent study mattered was because it was independent confirmation of the final step to be independently confirmed in the process, so now over the more than a decade that the pieces have been studied all parts are independently confirmed.

Depending on how two on-going studies on Suprelorin/deslorelin go there may wind up being an alternative approach. It will take some years more to have that info in full form, though partial data may emerge earlier.

Two of the possible things things that may throw a spanner into the works to very different degrees (but hopefully will not do so):
1. if the antagonistic effect of Suprelorin decreases over time in ferrets.
2. if people who are allergic to the musk of whole males react to the musk of males allowed to attain maturity and then placed on the implants, or to any non-neutered males placed on the implants

There are also nuances that remain unknown, for instance the possible differences btwn those neutered before a year of age vs. after a year. I don't know if people have noticed the reports from the Netherlands and British about unspayed females, but people in both locations have pointed out that hemolytic anemia is rare in females in their first heat, but more often seen in females after they are over a year old. The same thing was seen in a study by Dr. Karen Rosenthal when she looked at females who had ovarian remnants remaining after a spay. Most tended to not develop hemolytic anemia until they were past the age of a year. Question: What is different, or is this only a misleading red herring?
