I currently rent our home, so drastic measures are out of the question. I've come up with a good system though and it's worked well for me and my boys love it.

I have 2 cages that are connected by a tube. The "big cage" is 3-levels and is dedicated to a litterbox, food bowls, and hammocks. The second cage is smaller and is completely wrapped in a dark sheet. There's bedding strewn about as well as a couple of hammocks, and the boys use that area strictly for sleeping....usually sprawled out like a couple of dogs. They choose when and how long to sleep in the open and also when to retreat to the total darkness. As well, I have dark curtains that are pulled shut about an hour after the sun sets.

Even if you only have a single cage, you could use a dark sheet to black out one level, and if they don't like it then you're only out the cost of a sheet.

Mel.
