Subject: [ferrethealth] dehydrated/starved ferrets, conclusion
To: "ferrethealth@smartgroups.com" <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>

I figured the 'stargazing'was not good. I had to bring her to the vet
today after she stopped breathing; I was not sure, so they checked her for
me. She had passed on.

I had started with such a small amount of fluids on the advice of the vet,
since the condition of the ferret was absolutely horrific they said we
didn't want to shock her system. She was worse than a walking skeleton.
The other girl, Mia, you could feel weight in your hand if you held her.
Tia, you could not. Even Tia's fingers and toes and paws were terribly
small and shrunken.

We got her rehydrated and continued the sq fluids from up from 3cc to 30
cc until that was absorbed, and then more - she got a little better but
having stopped urinating completely for a day, I figured the worst. The
vet said her kidneys were unfeelable, being up inside her ribcage, and her
liver was almost non-existent. The ferret's abdomen has a diameter of less
than a dime's.

We did everything the vet said to do - they said it was worth trying but
she was too bad off. Now that Tia is gone, the roomate wants to press
charges against her roomate who did this. I had almost let the vet take
Tia's body but I remembered just in case, so I still have her body. (I
prefer to bury or cremate but I was sooo upset I almost said 'yes'..)

Thank you all for your wonderful advice. I cannot believe that people can
do things like this - and I hope for the best that this girl is prosecuted
to the full extent of the law ($1000 fine and up to 90 days in jail). Wish
me luck. Mia is good - she knew what Tia was going through and she's just
very hungry and lonely. Right now I can't give her a fur friend because
the fur friend might lay on her (she can't get up very well) and keep her
from moving around. She is getting outside time though with the rescues,
scooting around very nicely.

[Co-Moderator's Note: those who wish to reply to xxxxxxx about the abuse itself, or
about effective legal action MUST respond to her directly, please, the same as is
done for sympathy messages without new health content instead of posting because
of that data being off topic. Yes, it is horrific and appalls us all, and I know that all
of you will cry when you read her post above.

One note that is health related: I think that if her state experts on such cases agree
for that particular state's needs it would pay to take extensive photos and then have
a full necropsy with pathology and toxicology done, and to get copies of all vet
records with the vet signing them before a notary, if possible. -- SDC]
