Subject: [ferrethealth] ?? on advanced adrenal (Cookie update)
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Does anyone remember Cookie, whose eyes came out last December? Well, the lymphoma has spread to her adrenals (or maybe it's separate--it probably doesn't matter which), and she's getting round and bald, but still doing great. She's my NEP (no-eyed pink) ball of fire. I realized, when I had Cookie at the vet's for lupron yesterday, that although I know plenty about early signs of adrenal disease, I don't really know latter signs, or what exactly happens when I ferret dies of it. Cookie is still strong and active and social (with me and Buddy). But lately she's been feeling like she was burning up. HOT! I tried to take her temp with a rectal, and the vet tried with the ear thingie, but neither of us were successful. The vet did say, though, that adrenal sometimes shows with very warm periphery when the core temperature is normal. Said that seems to be the case w/Cookie because she is acting and eating fine.

And then also, she has lots of fluid buildup around the belly, which also isn't getting in her way. The vet said this can also be adrenal, and that she'll only want to draw it off if it starts causing problems (for example, with breathing). Said the fluid usually has proteins in it that are still being absorbed, so drawing it off may shock the system.

So I guess these are symptoms that I never heard of, maybe because all the web articles focus on initial diagnosis/symptoms. And it may be the adrenal that finally kills her, so I need to know more about that stage. What other things can I expect, and what exactly happens when adrenal becomes fatal? In terms of what the ferret goes through and what humans can observe, I mean?

By the way, I'd get the operation in a minute if I thought it was safe, but the anesthesia almost killed her last time (when her eyes were removed, as some of you remember), and she does also have lymphoma. Even though she's strong, she's got a lot going on.
