Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret after an accident-what to do?
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hello, =

My name is Dorota Siuda, I=92m from Poland. I've got 4 ferrets, but one of =
them, Roger, has a serious problem. I'm his second owner, so I don't know e=
very detail of accident, which took place in his childhood. To make matters=
worse the first owner wasn't trustworthy. =

At first, I=92d like to describe, what the previous owner of Roger told me.=
Roger at the age of 3-4 months fell down of the sofa. He couldn't walk so =
the owner took him to the vet, who took an x-ray photo and ordered to keep =
Roger into small "transporter" (I don't know this word in English) box for =
a month ( this fact I checked, because I went to the clinic, where Roger wa=
s treated, and spoke to that vet). After that time, broken bones knit. But =
Roger still couldn't walk normally, and forgot how to keep hygiene (earlier=
he could, as the man said). He didn=92t want to have his wooden floor fell=
into a ruin. That's why this man kept Roger in the dark bathroom, without =
possibility to go out. The animal was afraid of any noise, of any move, whe=
n I adopted him...
To return to the subject I did, of course, an x-ray and my vet says that th=
e accident was much more serious. The pelvic was totally broken into pieces=
and adhesion is not straight. It's impossible, that the reason of this tra=
gedy is only jump of the sofa....I went to another vet, specialized in surg=
ery (and ferret too), but in his opinion the operation takes more risk than=
advantages. =

I'm working with Roger by myself, because I want his muscles in legs to be =
stronger. And its are. Now, after 4 months since he came to us, he even doe=
sn't hobble. But the problem with hygiene is still the same. Only if I take=
him to the dish (I mean the place, where ferrets do pee) after he wakes up=
, and in dish is fresh dung then he does (with his "arms" on my hands) his =
pee. This is complicated, but for us this is a great step forward... =

And another thing - about Roger's passing urine. It looks like he doesn't e=
ven know he does pee. He just walks without stopping. The same is with stoo=
ls. He leaves it during the walk or in sleep. He never stands in corner wit=
h his tail raised to open his bowels or do the pee... But on the other hand=
he always excretes a big portion of urine, without any pain or discomfort.=
He was gelded in January but it didn't change anything.

My vets say that nothing can be done for Roger. That's why I=92m looking f=
or an extraordinary solution. Maybe some medicines could help, maybe some m=
ethods of rehabilitation?

I hope I make myself understood, my English needs to be improved=85

with regards =

Dorota
