Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: shivering, broken pelvis
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Mild shivering is normal body response to regulate temperature, though
there are exceptions. A few things to consider - What type of bedding
are you using? Does your little one have bedding to snuggle in?
Ferrets like to snuggle in sweatshirts, tshirts, fleece blankies, etc.
Are there any cooler drafts entering the cage? If the cage is near a
vent, door, or window there could be a draft. Is her environment kept
at a comfortable temperature? A friend will wear shorts inside in the
winter to check for drafts. Uncovered legs quickly let us know if
there is a cool draft coming in!

Our Swiffer had a broken pelvis and had to have his bladder expressed
regulary. When it got too full he would leak. You may want to check
with the vet about expressing his bladder. Swiffer had no control over
his bladder though he did for his bowels. He couldn't use his back
legs at all but he got around very well. At night in his bed I would
put a section of bed liner or cloth diaper under him to catch any
leakage and keep him dryer.

You could try massage and warm water bath therapies, helping him to
exercise his back end in a tub of warm water, not too deep though.
Also, for safety sake, don't leave him alone in water for any amount of
time, not even a minute. If you have to leave the room, take him out
of the water first.
