Subject: [ferrethealth] Lethargy/weight loss -- long (sorry)
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Milo is 3.5 years old. Almost two weeks ago he had a rabies vaccination; for the next three days he seemed a lethargic. I was told this was probably because of the vaccination, and just to keep an eye on him. Within a couple of days he seemed to have perked back up, so I thought all was well. He'd also been losing weight, but it's spring, so I thought nothing of it.

Then this past Tuesday he seemed lethargic again -- he would sit and his head would slowly nod forward until his nose rested against the floor; he also appeared to be squinting. He's not lethargic all the time; he'll play normally, but he tires quickly. He's also still losing weight, despite his appetite being fine.

I took him to the vet Wednesday -- here's what she e-mailed to me:

"He urinated while I took a small sample of blood, so... he is not blocked. The urinalysis had trace amount of blood in the sample and the glucose was negative.
His fecal was negative.
His bloodwork did not show any dramatic abnormalites. His glucose was not low... since his rectal temperature was not elevated, I [ran] the chemistry to check for his organ functions, etc.
I took a radiograph to check for any urine stones, heart disease, enlarged liver, etc. It all appeared normal.
His cbc was pretty normal. The only abnormality was the platlet count was low when read by the machine but we are going to look at a slide to confirm that as I think they are clumping together (not an abnormal thing) and that is why the count is low."

(They haven't looked at the slide yet.)

I've searched for information on what he could have, and found hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (if I spelled that right). There's no coughing, and no indication of any fluid buildup.

I'll be bringing him to the University of Georgia at Athens, but I was wondering if anyone here might have any ideas what this could be, and what I should look for between now and his UGA appointment? I'm afraid of making an appointment for a few days from now, and then finding that what Milo has can't wait that long. (It seems he hasn't gotten worse in the past couple of days, but I don't know what we're dealing with.)

Thanks for reading all of this, and for any suggestions you might have.
