Subject: [ferrethealth] Bilateral adrenalectomy
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

My 7 year old MF just had a bilateral adrenalectomy. A previous ferret that had one of these surgeries died after he became overly stressed- my vet said it was due to not being able to respond physiologically as he had no adrenal glands. NOT wanting a similar problem I asked my vet about preventative measures.
He has prescribed Prednisone (5 mg tablets) and Fludrocortisone (.1 mg). He said that he is unsure about the dosage so for the Prednisone has prescribed 1/10th-1/20th a tablet and for the Fludrocortisone 1/5th -1/10th a tablet. Both are in tablet form.
I have 3 questions:
1. If my ferret weighs about 3 lbs., does anyone know of a more accurate dosage?
2. Is there an easy way to measure 1/20th or 1/10th of a very small tablet?
3. Are there any complications from a bilateral adrenalectomy that I should be aware of?

Any info. would be appreciated. I really want my boy to live a longer and healthier life now that the surgery is completed.

-Shannon
