Subject: [ferrethealth] flagyl
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Some ferrets do not do well with flagyl. Flagyl leaves a very strong awful metalic flavor in your mouth for as long as it is taken. The longer it is taken the stronger the taste. Food and liquid will have the flavor of the metalic taste. It isn't just the flavor when the flagyl does into the system, it is a constant. I cannot stress strongly enough how nasty the flavor is nor how constant it is. Flagyl can cause nausea, upset tummy, mouth ulcers, lack of appetite and lethargy.

I recently had a call from someone who's vet had her ferret on flagyl since February. Before starting the flagyl the ferret was eating and drinking normally, a few days after starting the flagyl she stopped eating and has been hand fed what little they could get into her since that time. I advised taking her off the flagyl. Within 24 hours her appetite slowly started to return. In three days she was eating her soup with relish. I did have her call our vet to verify my suggestion, which he did.

I've personally taken flagyl and can attest to the side effects. We understand we have to eat even when everything tastes nasty, but ferrets don't and they won't which leads to weakness, dehydration and malnutrition.

Please, if your vet prescribes flagyl, and he/she isn't willing to try Biaxin if that type of antibiotic is needed for the specific bacteria, if your ferret stops eating or reacts negatively to the flagyl, discuss this possibility with your vet. My understanding is that flagyl is used to treat helicobactor so if your ferret doesn't have an overgrowth of helicobactor perhaps a more agreeble and gentler antibiotic can be given.

If the treatment is more severe than the ailment, or causes more severe symptoms, it may be possible that another antibiotic will work better. Don't be afraid to voice your concerns to your vet. Afterall, these little ones depend on us to look out for them and we are the ones that are with them and can see what is happening, the vets only see them for the office visit and many ferrets will perk up in a different environment so that doesn't give a true showing of how they feel.
