Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] surgery or no surgery, insulinoma and adrenal
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Hi,

Age 5 is too old for insulinoma and/or adrenal surgery? I don't think so.

Lady Ayeka had that surgery at age six and a half. A couple of days later
my biggest problem was limiting her activity until the sutures healed. She
recovered beautifully.

My Podo had a difficult right adrenal surgery with vena cava ligation when
he was seven and a half and insulinoma surgery at age eight. After the
insulinoma surgery he really seemed rejuvenated. I ended up with a happy,
bouncy, playful ferret again. He lived to be about 10 years old.

Kodo had insulinoma surgery at seven and a half. He got two good years out
of it as well.

If they were mine I'd be off for a second opinion. In particular your
ferret with a constant blood glucose of no more than 55 sounds like he
really does need surgery. I'm sure you can find an excellent ferret
surgeon closer than 1800 miles away. Let us know where you are and someone
will be able to give you a good recommendation based on personal
experience.

One caution: there may be other issues (i.e.: heart disease) that could
make one or both ferrets a poor surgical candidate. Age, by itself, isn't
usually a disqualifier until ferrets are considerably older than yours.

The usual disclaimer applies: I am not a vet.

All the best,
Caity and the fantastic four
(Nyssa, Ella, Zephyr, and Chin Soon)
