Subject: [ferrethealth] Adrenal and heart disease- to operate or not to operate
To: "FHL" <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>
I'll try to make this as short as possible. Willow, born late spring 2001,=
neutered early 2002. Right after her spay, she sounded congested, like she=
had fluid or mucous in the back of her throat or bronchial congestion. She=
would sound congested when she was excited, playing hard or going for a
walk. I took her to the vets a few times but was never told what she may
have, I think early on we tried something that could help clear mucous.
Willow was acting normally, playing, eating, being happy and the congestion=
she had every now and again didn't bother her. =
May 2003 she had an ectopic adrenal tumour removed. Her coat had become
thin and coarse and she was in pain from the tumour. It was situated where=
her left ovary would have been. Willow was a lot happier after the
operation, pain gone, grew new coat.
Recently she has been displaying symptoms of another painful adrenal tumour=
again. The congestion has also become worse. I took her to the vets 2 or
so months ago because of the congestion but again nothing was said or done.=
And in the last month she has played less, stopped eating by herself, and i=
n
the last week or two it has been obvious that she has abdominal pain. So I=
took her back to the vets again and my vet agrees it is likely that she has=
adrenal issues again and I asked to do an x-ray and do bloods because I
wanted her checked over before we go in.
Today my vet told me that Willow's heart is enlarged and the lungs are
congested, I can't remember all the terms but my vet seems to think she has=
some sort of heart problem and theorised that Willow has possibly had a
chronic bronchitis (since her spay) which caused the heart to enlarge, I
can't recall all the reasons why but my vet is thinking of putting her on
Frusemide and a bronchodilator and maybe Enacard. =
Now the dilemma of the adrenal tumour and heart problems. If it was a
normal adrenal tumour, I would not operate. But it's painful for her. So
what should I do? My vet said that prednisolone has some pain killing
properties? And prednisolone may help her lung issue as well?
Or if we decide to operate, what drugs can be given to lessen the risk of
the heart stopping under anaesthetic? I lost a ferret with cardiomyopathy
under anaesthetic a year ago when she had a dental done. Now my vet gives
atropine routinely when she does an anaesthetic for longer procedures
(dental, spay, operations). Is that enough? Or are there other precaution=
s
we can take?
