Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: egg yolk
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Many years ago back before it was known whether salt intact can make a difference for a ferret who appeared to be pre-cardiomyopathy we had to make a food for that ferret to see if limiting salt intake helped. (It did *not* help.) Anyway, we consulted with two veterinary nutritionists, both with doctorates in the topic. Both advised then that having hard boiled egg yolks in the food made was excellent food item which is very nutritious for them.

I will tell you this: if a ferret has a lot of egg in one sitting the feces gets bright yellow and you are aware of the sulphur component, so he will want to give small amounts.

Also, by itself as we were advised is the best way to give it by those experts the yolk is very dry, so some ferrets prefer it mixed with an oil based treat to make it easier to eat.

So, yes, it is a fine treat, albeit one that sometimes can produce some stinky results. ( Then again, so can fish get stinky but the omega 3 fatty acids in the fish oil -- not cod liver oil --is marvelous for the kidneys.) Not all food which smells best when in the litter box is optimally best for health.
