Jen,
I've seen this a few times. It's not that uncommon after an
insulinoma surgery. The good news is that it will usually settle down
back to normal after a time. What my vet has done with my guys is
push lots of fluids, watch creatinine and bun to keep track of the
kidneys, and get them off the pred asap; if they've been on pred for a
long time, weaning them off as quickly as possible. This has been
enough for mine, and they haven't had to go on insulin.
Now, my vet has always been ready to add insulin if needed. She
watches for ketones in the ferret's urine, and if these go above
trace, she would start the insulin. The danger in adding insulin
right off the bat is that because many of these cases will normalize
on their own, if you are adding insulin when that happens, you can
drop their blood sugar really low without too much warning. So it's a
case for close monitoring, which I know you're already doing.
Keep us posted, and good luck,
-Pam S.
