Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Pepto Bismol
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Pepto Bismol is as "safe" as ever. Its active ingredient, bismuth
subsalycilate (sp?) is related to aspirin, which means it must be
used with caution.

Your vet was probably thinking of KaoPectate, which used to be
extremely benign as the active ingredients were kaolin (clay) and
pectin (a water soluble fiber). Good for diarrhea and GI upset.
Unfortunately, Kaopectate *now* contains the same active
ingredient as Pepto Bismol, so now must be used with the same
degree of caution.
