Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret aggression
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com
I am in the process of introducing two 5 mon old ferrets (male and female) =
to my 5 yr old female. I have had the babies for a couple months now, and r=
ecently begun the introductions (I tried once awhile ago, when I first obta=
ined the babies, but the 5 yr old became very stressed and ill). Health wis=
e everyone is doing well...no diarrhea or anything after being together. Ha=
ppy as clams really. My question deals with the aggression the 5 yr old dis=
plays towards the babies when she sees them. She chases the male all over, =
though seldom catches him. WHen she does, or when she gets near the female,=
she goes for their neck and tries to shake them. Is this a form of dominan=
ce, or worse than that? As of now the babies are in their own cage in a dif=
ferent room of my house (the 5 yr old has free roam of my bedroom). I am sw=
itching bedding, and feeding them the same food. I was doing "playtimes" on=
ce a week with them, though I am thinking of trying once a day now, hoping =
it will tame the aggression. I am wondering if there is a chance they will =
ever get along...I would hate to have them live separate lives...I was hopi=
ng the babies could fill the void of two males that I lost in the last year=
and a half. I understand now that babies weren't the best choice for an ol=
der ferret...but I can't take it back now...we all make mistakes (though I =
love these little ones, so I don't know if it was a "mistake" per se). Any =
advice would be great...Thanks a lot.
