Subject: [ferrethealth] RE: aspirate a mass or exploratory
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

I am sure that by now she has been back to the vet, or the vet has been called for discussion.

Normally with such masses when they can't come out, or with huge spleens we have used careful massage up the ascending colon, from the ferret's right to left for the transverse and then then down the descending BUT IF THIS IS CYST I'D BE AFRAID TO TRY THAT.

If something is at risk of rupture even the use of laxatives can be questionable at times.

(Laxatives include things like fur ball meds, petroleum jelly, etc. Digestible oils are not laxatives per say. Digesting oils actually slows the process, but if too much oil is given for the small intestine to handle then irritation and diarrhea can result. Still, I would NOT try it unless the vet suggests doing so.)

Does your vet know for sure that this is not gas in the intestine in response to a full blockage (in which case rapid surgery is needed)?

Honestly, this one is tricky and may need rapid response, so let your treating ferret vet take the lead here. Sometimes there is no choice but to just try an experts' best guess and go from there.
