Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] glucose meters
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

All glucose meters are medical devices and are fairly accurate. You do not
need to multiply by anything to get the number for ferrets as it would read
the same is in humans. Your vet should not be using such a meter though and
should be using a more accurate blood test (although more costly). You can
easily buy one of your own and do it from home. I would recommend getting the
one that uses the least amount of blood as sometimes it is difficult to get
enough blood (especially if the ferret is slightly dehydrated) for a valid
read. If you do not get enough blood, you render the test strip useless and
have to use another which can add up fast as the test strips are most expensive.
For accurate readings, make sure the meter is coded and tested occasionally
per the manufacturers instructions as most test strip have a number
associated with them and the number has to be entered into the reader for the result
to be accurate. Also, make sure you are using strips that are not past the
expiration date and that you are storing everything well. Another tip is that
I shave the side of one of the rear toes and then draw the blood. You need
a drop and shaving carefully with a disposable razor helps this quite a bit.
