Hi Ulrike,
An enlarged heart on the x-ray is the first step.
The next step is to ultrasound the heart to find out
what is causing it to be enlarged! Once you know the
actual cause, you can start the correct medicine(s) to
control the heart disease. Enacard, lasix (furosemide),
bronchodilators, digoxin [or over in the UK Vetmedin
(Pimobendan)] may be needed. The ultrasound will really
help decide what medications are needed.
Pain is usually not a sign of adrenal gland disease, so
an ultrasound of the abdomen would be a good thing, to
see if there is something besides adrenal gland disease
going on.
Now the decision on surgery on a ferret with heart disease
is always a tough one. I would recommend medical treatment
of the adrenal gland disease because it is the much safer option.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
