Subject: [ferrethealth] best light for allowing high enough melatonin levels: amber
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

There has often been discussion about which light wave lengths decrease melatonin output and which wavelengths have the least effect.

It had long been known that blue and green were the worst in terms of the great reductions of melatonin the body produces itself. Blue is the absolute worst (which is why it turns out that blue light can cause a person to become zippy) in terms of preventing melatonin production in the body.

People had done just guesswork at what interfered the least. It turns out that amber has the least reduction on melatonin output. (In fact, I had to markedly rearrange my work schedule recently and wearing amber sunglasses over my glasses starting at 8 p.m. did a better job at letting me go to sleep at an earlier hour than anything I have ever tried, and did it so much better and faster that Steve and I were completely shocked.)

Because ferrets having sufficient melatonin is related to adrenal health I figured that some recent research into light wavelengths would be of interest. It is human health work, but melatonin is a very basic bodily product with very many functions so the basic things learned are likely to generalize safely.

Now to find amber shades for the lights in the ferret room here for when lights must be on. (We already have sleep boxes, cages covers, etc.)
