Subject: [ferrethealth] ECE Virus
To: ferrethealth@smartgroups.com

Well it was a bad weekend lost one ferret to ECE I am a miracal worker with any
sick ferret the new strain ofECE is very hard I hope for all ferret owners they do not
have to ever deal with this virus you take the chances if you are around other
ferrets they can carry this for along time stay away from other ferrets you may bring
it home on clothing if you put your ferret around others to all who love ferrets read
up on ECE its one of the main causes of illness/death and kidney falure/&adrenal
disease those are the top of the list problems I've delt with it all just ask me My vet
says I know more about ferret health than most vets and I teach him things !!!!!!!!
just ask me the other lady sukie is not upto date with all the things with ferrets no
discrimanation but some of info is wrongshe also needs to read aboutECE virus

[Moderator's Note: I was informed note very long ago by those who know the topic
best that there is not a new strain of ECE, but will recheck with those researchers
(Dr. Bruce Williams who was the original person to identify the coronavirus, and Dr.
Matti Kiupel who independently verified the cause and is doing continuing research
on the coronavirus. (BTW, I am also in touch with a member of a European
veterinary research team which has found an intriguing presentation that may be
this coronavirus or may be something else, but they have only done preliminary
work to date.)

Older ferrets always are hit especially hard compared to young ones.

Also, many people call things which are not ECE "ECE".

Be sure to read:
http://www.afip.org/ferrets/ECE/ECE.html

When throat or mouth ulceration happens it is because of dehydration. Many ferrets
with ECE need sub-cu hydration daily as well as oral, and some need IV.

When we had it here the symptoms lasted 3 months in the hardest hit. One took
some kidney damage. One got secondary colitis. One had a secondary bacterial
flare. Stomach or intestinal ulceration has also been reported by some (black
stools). It can be hard to tell the secondary problems apart at times.

We stayed away from any other ferrets and any pet stores which carried ferrets for a
year after the symptoms stopped -- a bit on the long side but better safe than
sorry.

There is a lot in the archives.

It doesn't cause adrenal disease, but it can very possibly be an IBD trigger from the
damage it does to the small intestine.

Sorry about replying in this fashion, but I am terribly short on time
