Biotin=97A Simple Answer?
In a nutshell, biotin is a vitamin (also known as vitamin H), but biotin is=
actually a very complex bicyclic, or heterocyclic, molecule. That means th=
at biotin is constructed of two different rings: an ureido ring and a tetra=
hydrothiophene ring. There are different atoms (carbon) that stem from the =
tetrahydrothiophene ring, creating a valeric acid chain. Biotin is actually=
affiliated with amino acids (lysine in particular) and the metabolism. The=
re are four enzymes that are linked with biotin: CoA carboxylase (PCC), pyr=
uvate carboxylase (PC), acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC), and beta- methylcroto=
nyl CoA carboxylase (b-MCC). If there is a deficiency of PCC and b-MCC can =
result in horrendous metabolic-related conditions. ACC is needed for creati=
on of fatty acids and PC is needed for gluconeogenesis (the creation of glu=
cose {blood sugar}). The way biotin is linked to these four enzymes is this=
: it acts as a sort of =91carrier=92 of CO2 (carbon dioxide) to carboxylate=
(to form a compound using acid and CO2 or carboxyl) atoms and acids. This =
is a two step process that basically creates compounds with the same carbox=
ylases. Biotin is absorbed through the intestinal tract where it undergoes =
intense separation and combination through what=92s called proteolysis (spl=
itting of proteins into other molecules and compounds). =
Biotin deficiency results in a potentially life-threatening condition usual=
ly characterized by weak nails and hair among other symptoms. Avidin is a p=
rotein commonly and abundantly found in raw egg whites. The problem with av=
idin is that it binds ever so strongly with biotin, rendering biotin ineffi=
cient and inactive. Too much avidin in a diet can lead to biotin deficiency=
. Cooking egg whites leaves avidin unable to bind with biotin, but caution =
should be used to ensure fully cooked egg whites before consumption. As lon=
g as one doesn=92t consume too many plain egg whites, this shouldn=92t be t=
oo much of a concern. Biotin is also found in egg yolks, liver and milk, al=
ong with yeast. A varied ferret diet that contains small amounts of raw who=
le eggs or egg yolks should be just fine. Raw egg whites by themselves, how=
ever, obviously pose a risk. Discretion should be used. =
