Subject: [ferrethealth] Need input with diabetes in ferret post surgery
To: <ferrethealth@smartgroups.com>
Good Morning All,
On May 23rd, our ferret Oliver had adrenal surgery, while in there the vet
examined the pancreas and found a 'hard spot' which he removed. I inquired
about diabetes and though skeptical he told me what to watch for. Needless
to say, Oliver developed diabetes over the Memorial day weekend. Thanks to a
wonderful friend I was able to get my hands on insulin. (her ferret had
diabetes after surgery also). On Tuesday I was at the vets and he ran blood
work, only to confirm the diabetes. Oliver was on 1 unit of Novolin twice
daily. I have been checking his glucose with my own meter and it wasn't
going down. We upped his dosage to 2 units twice daily. It is still in the
300's. I tried to call the vet, only to find out that he was on vacation and
wouldn't be returning until this week. I need to get the glucose down. My
question is:
Do I up the dosage yet again? Do I wait for the vet's approval? How long can
a ferret be on insulin?
I will be calling the vet tomorrow (June 12th) but I'm worried about the
effects of the high glucose. I did search the archives and found a few
things.
Thanks for any and all replies,
Mary
