Katharine:
I missed your first post regarding Cryptococcosis, but somehow can't log on and put a message on the FHL. Here is my experience with Cryptococcosis. I sent you a private email also but thought others in the group might want this information also.

My Pebbles had a lump removed from under her chin in the throat area... Pathology report came back that she had Cryptococcosis -- this was in Feb of 2004. My vet checked, and I checked on the FHL and we did the blood titers to get a baseline of how much was in her blood. Then we started her on daily meds of Itraconazole for 10 months. Did the titers again .. still in her blood, but much lower, and she seemed healthier ...

This type of fungus infection is very hard to get rid of, I have an on going prescription of this that is compounded into a Vanilla type taste with sweetener to make her want to take it. When she starts coughing or acting sicker I start her on the meds for another month, and then off again until she starts again ... she is still alive over 2 years later ... all vets are surprised. From what I understand she is the longest living ferret with this disease.

Now the important thing that I also do is to add Milk Thistle Extract to her gravy when she is on the medication. The extract is approved by my vet and recommended often for liver problems, in humans also. The antibiotic is supposed to cause injury to the liver ... she had an ultrasound about a year after her first meds, and her liver still looks good.

Pebbles is now over 5 years old ... she is showing strong signs of adrenal disease. We are concerned about operating on her because the fugus could spread with contact to air. She is on the Melatonin Implants and also Lupron ... She is Mommies Princess ... and still giving lots of herself to the group and to us humans. Not sure what will get her first, but in my eyes she is my miracle baby.

If you have any other questions, please email, and I will try to help.

Florence
